Anglicare event shines a light on youth homelessness
Cherice Nielson knows all too well the fear and feelings of hopelessness that come with being homeless. Now a registered nurse working in a big-city hospital, she also knows the far-reaching and lifechanging effects of simply having a roof over her head and adults to guide her in at a critical time in life.
Youth homelessness was the focus of a luncheon attended by Cherice and other formerly homeless young people in Brisbane on Friday, hosted by Anglicare Southern Queensland.
Anglicare, which offers a wide range of services that continue to make a huge impact in our state, has announced a $13 million initiative in Logan offering a new housing model that will provide young people with a safe space and hope for the future. Up to 30 per cent of homeless individuals in Logan are aged 12-24.
Her Excellency thanked those attending the luncheon for joining the conversation on youth homelessness and listening to those with lived experience.
“Here in Queensland, nearly 22,000 young people experience homelessness every year, and this demands both our attention and our urgent action,” she said.
The Governor praised Anglicare’s Youth Homelessness Project, saying it offered young homeless people hope “that one day, despite their desperate early circumstances, they will be able to live without fear and enjoy similar opportunities to those who had more fortunate upbringings”.
