Australian Bravery Decorations August 2024
The Governor has praised the courage and selfless sacrifice of the 13 Queenslanders who have been awarded Commendations for Brave Conduct in the August 2024 Australian Bravery Decorations.
Announced by the Governor-General this evening, the decorations honour those Australians who put themselves in danger to protect the lives or property of others.
From pursuing armed offenders to rescuing passengers from burning vehicles, pulling an unconscious surfer from an unforgiving ocean, or a young girl from raging floodwaters, the acts of bravery performed by these everyday heroes are both inspiring and deserving of our gratitude.
“People who commit brave acts do not always seek public recognition,” said Her Excellency the Governor. “These bravery decorations are an acknowledgement of those qualities we most respect as a nation – the qualities of courage, altruism, and selflessness.”
On behalf of all Queenslanders, the Governor congratulates the following recipients and thanks them for their brave actions:
Commendation for Brave Conduct
Mr Nicholas Abussi is commended for brave conduct for his actions treating a victim during the pursuit of an armed offender near Gatton, Queensland on 29 May 2017.
Mr Peter Buxton is commended for brave conduct for his actions assisting passengers who were trapped on a burning bus in Moorooka, Queensland on 28 October 2016.
Mr Adam Flory is commended for brave conduct for his actions treating a victim during the pursuit of an armed offender near Gatton, Queensland on 29 May 2017.
Mr Lachlan Marks is commended for brave conduct for his actions during the rescue of an unconscious surfer at Fingal Head, New South Wales on 9 September 2019.
Mr Crispin McCorry is commended for brave conduct for his actions assisting passengers who were trapped on a burning bus in Moorooka, Queensland on 28 October 2016.
Mr Douglas McKenzie is commended for brave conduct for his actions treating a victim during the pursuit of an armed offender near Gatton, Queensland on 29 May 2017.
Mr Michael Misi is commended for brave conduct for his actions during the rescue of a young girl from flood waters near Woree, Queensland on 17 February 2023.
Ms Maria Mourilyan is commended for brave conduct for her actions treating a victim during the pursuit of an armed offender near Gatton, Queensland on 29 May 2017.
Mr Ayuek Nyok is commended for brave conduct for his actions assisting passengers who were trapped on a burning bus in Moorooka, Queensland on 28 October 2016.
Mrs Lay Ong is commended for brave conduct for her actions treating a victim during the pursuit of an armed offender near Gatton, Queensland on 29 May 2017.
Mr Alexander Stewart is commended for brave conduct for his actions during the rescue of two people from a car fire near Harvey, Western Australia on 12 March 2022.
Mr Jamieson Woods is commended for brave conduct for his actions treating a victim during the pursuit of an armed offender near Gatton, Queensland on 29 May 2017.
Senior Sergeant Michael Milde is commended for brave conduct for his actions apprehending a male armed with a kitchen knife in Alice Springs, Northern Territory on 17 July 2022.
Two Australian Bravery lists are announced every year. The independent Australian Bravery Decorations Council makes recommendations to the Governor-General regarding who should be recognised and at what level of award.
