This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Australian Honours system, which was established on 14 February in 1975.
The anniversary is a chance to reflect on the extraordinary Australians who have been celebrated in the first five decades, and, as we look forward to the next 50 years, Her Excellency encourages all Queenslanders to think about deserving individuals they could nominate in recognition of their contributions to our great State.
Recipients of Australian Honours have contributed in diverse and wide ranging fields. While some are household names, the vast majority are unsung heroes. The common characteristics they share, are that they are selfless, and have worked tirelessly in their chosen field, going above and beyond to have an impact.
Nominated by their peers, they remind us that care, kindness, and respect are what matter most to all Australians.
As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, Government House hosted a special morning tea, inviting past recipients across the spectrum of the Australian Honours, including within the Order of Australia, and awards for Bravery, Distinguished, Conspicuous, and Meritorious Service.
Addressing those gathered, Her Excellency noted that recognition of Queenslanders has almost trebled from just 3.6 per cent in 1975 to 9.7 percent today, and female representation is approaching parity.
"As Governor, I am very proud to see such growth and I know that, with your support, as award recipients, the Australian system of Honours and Awards will continue to flourish as the pre-eminent way for Australians to recognise the achievements and service of their fellow citizens."
