Governor visits Gold Coast amid post-cyclone recovery efforts
Her Excellency has visited the Gold Coast to see firsthand the city’s ongoing recovery efforts following Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
Having been welcomed to the Disaster and Emergency Management Centre by Gold Coast Mayor, Councillor Tom Tate, the Governor received a briefing on the city’s response before touring sand restoration works on the iconic coastline, where devastating erosion has impacted world-famous beaches.
Home to more than 635,000 residents and welcoming close to a million visitors each year, the Gold Coast is renowned for its natural beauty, particularly its unspoilt white-sand beaches, which are a huge tourism drawcard. Last financial year, the Gold Coast welcomed 11.64 million visitors, who spent a combined $7.45 billion, providing employment for more than 20,000 people.
Her Excellency commended Council and all involved for their swift action in preserving and protecting these vital assets for future generations.
