Explore Fernberg's newly opened bushland tracks
The 16.3-hectare Fernberg Estate, a protected green space in the heart of Brisbane on which Government House is located, has a long and fascinating history.
Visitors to the Family Day Out on April 15 can experience this history firsthand by walking the newly opened bushland tracks—a network of scenic trails that wind through the Estate’s remnant native bushland. The Estate is home to diverse native flora, fauna, and heritage landmarks, including century-old trees and remnants of early Brisbane’s development. Through ongoing conservation efforts such as bush regeneration and sustainable landscape management, this precious green space remains a thriving sanctuary for both wildlife and visitors. Updated directional and informational panels will help guide visitors, providing insights into both the natural environment and the Estate’s historical legacy.
The bushland tracks initiative reflects the Governor’s commitment to ensuring this historic and ecologically significant site is accessible to the community. It also supports the Governor’s pledge, made at her swearing-in, to promote a healthy and active Queensland. Her Excellency regularly co-hosts free community walks through the Estate, in partnership with Health and Wellbeing Queensland, of which she is Patron. (See the Visit Government House section on our website for more information.)
'Stepping Out From Fernberg'
The day also marks the launch of Stepping Out From Fernberg, a collection of writings by Professor Nimmo, spouse of the Governor. Inspired by his walks through the suburbs surrounding Government House, this online publication explores the rich history, heritage, and natural beauty of Brisbane’s inner west. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the author and hear firsthand about the stories and places that have shaped this part of the city.
Government House Open House
Additionally, Government House will be open throughout the event. Government House, of Fernberg (German for distant mountain) as it is also known, has served as the official residence and workplace of Queensland Governors since 1910, combining its role as a Vice-Regal residence with historical, cultural, and environmental significance as a heritage-listed landmark. Our experienced and knowledgeable guides will be on hand to answer all your questions and explain the historical and cultural significance of the property.
The Fernberg Walks Family Day Out is designed to be an inclusive and welcoming event for people of all ages. Whether you’re interested in history, conservation, or simply enjoying a walk in nature, the day offers something for everyone. The initiative also ensures that the Government House Estate remains a place where the past and present come together, offering visitors a deeper appreciation of Queensland’s history and natural heritage.
We look forward to seeing you here!
