Presentation of the Speaker takes place
The newly elected Speaker, the Honourable Patrick (Pat) Weir MP, was formally presented to the Governor in a ceremony known as the "Royal Approbation”.
The Speaker was presented by the Premier and Deputy Premier, accompanied by the Clerk of Parliament and Sergeant-at-Arms, bearing the parliamentary Mace symbolising the Speaker's (and hence the Parliament's) authority.
Her Excellency also signed the commission authorising the Speaker to administer the Oath of Allegiance and Office to members of the Legislative Assembly.
The official Opening of Parliament follows, when MPs gather in the Legislative Council Chamber to hear the Governor deliver the opening speech, outlining the Government's policies for the upcoming parliament.
Following the speech, the Governor exits, the Speaker takes the Chair, and Members are led into the Legislative Assembly by the Sergeant-at-Arms — as always, bearing the Mace.
