The Governor visits the Southern Downs
The Governor spent three days visiting the Southern Downs and Goondwindi in late May, continuing to deliver on her pledge to be Governor for all of Queensland and travel widely throughout the State.
Her Excellency and Professor Nimmo had the opportunity to visit hospitals and health services in Inglewood, Texas, Stanthorpe, and Warwick to thank to the wonderful Darling Downs health staff for their hard work and dedication to supporting the wellbeing of Queenslanders.
Visits to Texas State School and St Joseph’s School in Stanthorpe provided a wonderful opportunity for the Vice-Regal couple to engage with young Queenslanders and promote the importance of literacy, while meetings with regional councils and business leaders provided valuable insight into local issues and challenges.
Particularly of interest to the Governor were the ongoing recovery efforts in Inglewood following the devastating floods of late 2021 which necessitated a full evacuation of the town in the dead of night.
Of course, no trip to the Granite Belt would be complete without sampling some of the region’s renowned produce and wines! Her Excellency and Professor Nimmo enjoyed meeting with several local producers and tourism operators to commend their ongoing resilience through the challenges of drought then flood and congratulate them on their contribution to forging the region’s reputation for outstanding local produce.
