Vice-Regal couple cheer on Queenslanders at Olympics
The Governor and Professor Nimmo have attended a number of events in and around Paris, as part of their official visit to represent Queensland at the 2024 Olympics ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Games.
They were poolside for the first two nights of swimming competition at Paris La Défense Arena, celebrating Ariarne Titmus’s gold medal win in the women's 400m freestyle; the women's 4x100m freestyle relay gold; Elijah Winnington’s men's 400m freestyle silver; and the men's 4x100m freestyle relay silver.
At La Concorde Urban Park, they attended the women’s skateboard street final to support Gold Coaster Chloe Covell, representing her country at just 14 years old in this newly introduced Olympic sport. She was joined in competition at this Olympics by young Rural Fire Service Queensland volunteer member Haylie Powell from the Sunshine Coast.
Against the stunning backdrop of the stunning Château de Versailles, they witnessed Christopher Burton, from Toowoomba, take silver riding on Shadow Man after a flawless final jumping ride in the individual equestrian eventing.
At a Paris 2024 welcome reception held at the Australian Embassy, hosted by the Australian Olympic Committee and Australia’s Ambassador to France, Ms Gillian Bird PSM, they were excited to mix with many distinguished guests, including celebrated Olympian Ms Dawn Fraser AC MBE.
The Governor and Professor Nimmo leave Paris on Tuesday.
