Vice-Regal couple in United Kingdom en route to Paris 2024
Meetings and greetings in London
The Governor and Professor Nimmo have begun their official visit to the United Kingdom and France, proudly representing Queensland at the Paris Olympics while championing our state's trade, business, and cultural interests.
In London, the Vice-Regal couple kicked off the trip with a briefing at Queensland House hosted by Mr Warren Bartlett, Deputy Commissioner of TIQ Europe, setting the stage for fruitful discussions ahead. Their itinerary included a meeting with the Australian High Commissioner to the UK, the Honourable Stephen Smith AC, and Deputy High Commissioner Ms Elizabeth Bowes PSM at Australia House London, further strengthening Queensland's diplomatic ties.
On Saturday, they then took time to embrace local traditions, attending the Evensong Service at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, a cherished place of worship for the Royal Family and the community. At the King George VI Memorial Chapel, they laid a floral tribute for Queen Elizabeth II, who appointed Her Excellency to her current role and whose legacy continues to inspire. While on Sunday, they attended a service at the Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace, with Her Excellency delivering the Epistle, reinforcing our enduring ties with The Royal Family.
On Monday local time, the Governor and Professor Nimmo will explore cutting-edge technology at the Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials, Swansea University Bay Campus, part of #CSconnected – the world’s first compound semiconductor cluster. Accompanied by Professor Andrew White, Director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS) and EQUS Translation Research Program Manager Professor Michael Harvey, they will tour the centre, meeting with senior researchers and government representatives to discuss future collaborations on compound semiconductors between Queensland and Wales. They will also visit Imperial Park Newport, a hub for advanced manufacturing and research and development, underscoring Queensland's commitment to global innovation partnerships.
They are scheduled to join a private audience with His Majesty King Charles III at Sandringham House on Tuesday, to reaffirm the enduring friendship between Queensland and the UK. Following this, they will journey to France to continue Queensland's participation at the Paris Olympics.
