Thursday Island Community Reception
I acknowledge both Mayors here tonight – thank you for welcoming Kaye and me here once again this evening.
It was a privilege to meet the Elders of this cherished and special part of Queensland prior to the commencement of tonight’s community reception. We were particularly touched by Uncle Wigness’ candour and the sincerity of his welcoming remarks.
On Sunday and Monday we visited communities on the ‘the tip’ of Cape York, and today, the outer islands of the Torres Strait.
We have been very touched by the spirit, warmth and generosity of the people of this region we have met – your communities, your rich and varied cultures, are a vital and special part of our State’s identity; it is an honour to acknowledge that, as I do as Governor, on behalf of all Queenslanders.
This year, 100 years on from the Gallipoli landings, we pause to remember all those who served our nation during times of war.
I particularly mention the unique and vital contribution the 700 or so members of Torres Strait Island Light Infantry Battalion, and the support they received from their communities, made to defending our nation during World War II.
Our State, and nation, is indebted to their service.
Thank you all for taking the time to join us tonight – we are honoured to acknowledge your contributions – they magnificently enrich the fabric of our State.
And I am sure Sam Thaiday will draw on that proud Torres Strait heritage tomorrow night when he takes to the field in the twenty-fifteen Origin opener in Sydney.
