Oakleigh State School Assembly
Principal, Ms Carstairs, Distinguished guests, Parents, Teachers, and Students,
Thank you very much for welcoming me to Oakleigh State School.
I’m told the name given to your school - “Oakleigh” - emerged last century to celebrate the marriage of a member of an early family, the Oakdens, to a Miss Leigh.
To me, it means that “Oakleigh” was about family, right from the very beginning.
Students, I know that Oakleigh State School is very precious to your families, and indeed, to the whole Ashgrove community.
But you may not know that your school is very special to me, as your Governor.
My father taught here many years ago, and our family’s tradition of teaching at Oakleigh proudly continues today, with Ms Julie Riddell.
My father would have been pleased – as was I - to read on your website that Oakleigh State School is a place where all are welcome, and all make a difference.
While I think he would have been impressed at the many ways Oakleigh State School has grown over the years, I think he would have been most impressed by the way the students here are eager to learn.
Kaye and I are looking forward to visiting your classrooms and seeing the wonderful work you have been doing, and the exciting ways your educators are teaching you about the world.
Your school’s motto of “Deeds not words” sets a very high standard, to which I know all of you aspire.
It is also a motto which will stand you in good stead, not just during your school years, but throughout your lives.
I extend warm congratulations to all the new school leaders.
I know your families are proud of you, and I’m proud of you too.
Today you formally begin your role in 'Growing Oakleigh'.
Thank you very much for hosting us today. I’m proud to have the Governor’s Standard flying above such a fine school.
It is an honour to be here, and I wish you all the best for the school year.
