Afternoon Reception for the presentation of the Wesley Medical Research Achievements Awards
Chairman, Mr Peter Allen and fellow board members, Chief Executive Officer, Associate Professor John Allan, distinguished medical researchers and supporters, Ladies and gentlemen,
As Governor and Chief Patron of Wesley Medical Research, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Government House for the presentation of the Wesley Medical Research Achievements Awards.
Since its inception in 1994, Wesley Medical Research has developed into an institute of international repute, and the significance of its ground-breaking discoveries extends far beyond the borders of our State. Over the past quarter of a century, Wesley Medical Research has continuously pushed the boundaries of what medicine can deliver to patients and their families in Queensland and much further afield.
Progress in science is the result of tireless efforts by clinicians, doctors and other researchers investigating the causes of and potential treatments for disease.
Each case they deal with represents the piece of a gigantic puzzle that, once completed, contributes to the international body of knowledge and strengthens the potential for future cure or prevention. As researchers build upon the work of their peers, every time a piece of the puzzle is put in place the picture becomes a bit clearer. It is a gradual, step-by-step process that delivers exciting findings or, at the very least, provides valuable insights.
Wesley Medical Research has become recognised as a world leader in applied medical research and is now widely acknowledged for achieving excellence and innovation in patient care and quality of life. However, all this would not be possible without the aid of donors, sponsors and other supporters, both corporate and private.
They are all vital in ensuring Wesley Medical Research can continue to be a driving force within the medical research community in Queensland.
I am convinced that everyone contributing to the success of Wesley Medical Research feels enormous pride in their connection with the institute and its mission. On behalf of all Queenslanders, I wish to thank them wholeheartedly for their ongoing generosity.
I would also like to extend my sincerest gratitude to the entire Wesley Medical Research team for their very important work. Your determination, dedication and professionalism are tremendously appreciated. Today, we join in celebrating your outstanding contributions towards improving the lives of thousands of people.
I wish you every success, now and in the future, and offer my warmest congratulations to award nominees and award winners whom I look forward to meeting in a short while. Thank you.
