Reception for the Boys’ Brigade and Girls’ Brigade awards presentation
Boys’ Brigade Queensland President, Mr Dave Allen; Girls’ Brigade Queensland State Commissioner, Mrs Heather Richards; distinguished guests; ladies and gentlemen; girls and boys.
Kaye and I are delighted to welcome you all to Government House to honour our 12 award recipients this evening.
As Patron of both Boys’ Brigade and Girls’ Brigade it is a pleasure to have the opportunity to meet with this year’s awardees of the Queen’s Badge and the Queen’s Award.
The Brigades have been an important part of Queensland life for decades and, all these years later, their objectives remain as relevant as ever.
Indeed, some might argue that, in 2018, when many young people are choosing the company of technology over the company of each another, the goals of the Brigades are more relevant than in their foundation years.
There are many ingredients to human happiness, but central to its manifestation is the fostering of genuine inter-connections with others, and with the natural environment.
The sense of purpose and empowerment that comes with overcoming challenges is another.
But this evening I am speaking to the converted – I suspect you know this already.
For each of you, through your commitment to attaining a Queen’s Badge and a Queen’s Award, have demonstrated that you possess the kind of qualities which will continue to reward and enrich your lives.
Leadership, a sense of responsibility to yourselves and to others, a passion for service and the community – each of these traits reflects integrity and a strength that will bring happiness not just to yourselves, but also to those around you.
I congratulate each and every one of you on your achievements.
I also acknowledge the parents, carers and mentors here this evening who have supported you on your journey, a journey which I am sure is far from over!
And finally, I thank the Brigade leaders, the men and women without whom this program would be unable to continue.
The benefit of your care and encouragement of these remarkable young Queenslanders is immeasurable.
Please enjoy the hospitality of Government House this evening.
I hope you will take the time to share your experiences with one another, and I encourage each of you to take a moment tonight to reflect on your accomplishments and be proud.
Thank you.
