l Visit to Glenleighden School

Thank you, Principal Morey, for your kind welcome, and for inviting me to visit your school. Thank you also to the Chair of Speech and Language Development Australia, Mr Peter Seldon, and fellow board members, for taking time to be here. You should all be very proud of what has been achieved here at Glenleighden.

I, too, acknowledge the traditional owners of the lands on which we gather, extend respectful greetings to Elders, past and present, with encouragement to future leaders.

This is my first visit to your school, and I am very happy to meet you all.

I am the Governor of Queensland, which means that I represent Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second. Just last week my wife Kaye and I were in London, where we met The Queen at Buckingham Palace. Her Majesty is always interested to hear of the well-behaved boys and girls of Queensland.

One of my favourite duties as Governor is visiting schools and meeting the children who go there. I always enjoy seeing what the students are doing. I know that interesting and exciting work goes on in your classrooms, so I am looking forward to visiting a classroom today and learning about what you are studying.

Another reason I like visiting schools is that it gives me the chance to thank the teachers and staff for their wonderful work.

You have exceptional teachers and staff here who work very hard to make your learning journey a fun and successful one, and I thank them for that.

Kaye and I were disappointed we could not make it to your 40th Anniversary Gala Dinner in August. Forty years is a long time, and it is worthy of being celebrated. When you are 40 years old, I hope that you, too, will have a big celebration.

But there will be many parties and celebrations before then.

On Sunday it will be December, which means that there are only a few more weeks until Christmas! Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year. I love Christmas food, I love Christmas carols, and that is why I am particularly looking forward to hearing the Early Childhood students singing Christmas songs shortly. I also love Christmas lights, and I hope you and your families can visit Government House for our lights display from the 13th to the 20th of December.

Before I leave I would like to wish you the very best for the rest of the school year, and I wish you all a very safe and happy Christmas.
