Official Opening of the Access Arts’ Exhibition: Celebrating Difference
Thank you, Pat, for such a warm welcome. Our Access Arts President, Justice Bradley; Access Arts and CPL Board members and staff; KPMG Queensland Chair, Mr Hiller; distinguished guests; ladies and gentlemen.
I at once also acknowledge the traditional owners of the lands around Brisbane, and extend respectful greetings to Elders, past and present.
I am extremely pleased to join you once again this evening. This is the third warmly enthralling Access Arts’ exhibitions I have had the pleasure of officially launching at KPMG premises.
The works in this year’s Celebrating Differences exhibition have been specially commissioned and created by up to 16 different artists from Access Arts workshop programs.
They are presented by visual artists who are developing their skills to a professional standard, so we are fortunate to have a first glimpse of them tonight.
Disability Action Week is a timely reminder of the power of creativity in transforming lives and removing barriers to expression that otherwise can seem steadfast.
I express deep admiration for all exhibiting artists. I encourage each of you to continue in the pursuit of self-expression – and our enjoyment! What wonderful works you create!
The great news is that you have some heavyweights in your corner, advocating for the importance of your work.
As Patron of both Access Arts and CPL, I was warmed by news earlier this year of their formal integration.
After 36 busy years, Access Arts continues to thrive, thanks in no small part to the dedicated team I gratefully acknowledge here this evening.
Likewise, CPL is an outstanding and dynamic organisation, powered by the passion of its staff and volunteers.
With their collaboration now in full swing, we look forward to enjoying many new initiatives that will ensure these talented artists make their mark on the industry.
I congratulate and thank KPMG for their ongoing commitment to this annual exhibition.
I hope you will show your support of their generosity by purchasing some of the wonderful artwork on display tonight.
In doing so you also demonstrate your encouragement of the artists, their work and personal courage.
So, no pressure! – but I must say these works would make a great addition to any home or office space. Congratulations again to all the artists and I wish each of you an enjoyable evening. Thank you.
