Afternoon Reception for the Vice-Regal Patronage Organisations in Health, Youth and Education
Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, I warmly welcome you all to Government House.
I at once acknowledge the traditional owners of these lands and extend respectful greetings to Elders and emerging leaders.
During the past seven years, I have been truly inspired by the organisations of which Kaye and I have been privileged to be Patrons.
It gives me the greatest pleasure to pay tribute this afternoon to the important and life changing work of organisations under the umbrella of health, youth and education.
It would be a mistake, however, to contain your organisations’ achievements to just one of these themes – or even to one geographical location, so many organisations so wonderfully committed to operating through a statewide lens.
Improving mental and physical health and wellbeing, advocating for social justice – especially for the young, and promoting educational opportunities are concerns common to all organisations represented here tonight.
During this 26th governorship, I have been humbled to witness firsthand the remarkable strength of our Queensland communities, especially those confronting adversity – prolonged drought, ravaging bushfires, an ongoing pandemic, along with homelessness and other privations.
These challenges continue to test our resolve.
But Queenslanders greatly appreciate the role of the non-government sector in providing additional layers of care and attention, ensuring our citizens and their families remain safe, well and connected.
I sincerely commend your dedicated staff and the vast numbers of volunteers who serve your organisations.
They are remarkable Queenslanders, who work tirelessly with compassion and without fuss.
On behalf of all Queenslanders, I further thank you and the organisations you represent for your contributions to the wellbeing and advancement of our State.
While saddened my time as Patron will shortly come to an end, I am delighted to have this one last opportunity to share with you all the hospitality of Government House.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do for the people of Queensland.
