Dinner in Support of the Townsville Community

Mayor, distinguished guests. 

When I became Queensland’s 26^th Governor, I pledged, with Kaye’s support, to visit all communities within the State.

In August 2014, my very first regional vice-regal visit was to the wonderful city of Townsville.

I said then that it was “nostalgically important” for me to begin, and hopefully end my travels here, given both Kaye’s and my close warmly personal connections to this proud garrison City.

I am therefore delighted that this weekend I have fulfilled that promise – marking my final regional visit as Governor!

I have now been a guest here 30 times during my term – my most visited destination outside Brisbane – and each trip has been met with tremendous warmth and hospitality.

I have seen Townsville at its most celebratory, and sadly, in times of great struggle, but it has always been its people who have left the greatest impression on me.

Each year, I have been honoured to be part of the Australia Day Flag Raising ceremony at the Jezzine Barracks—reminding us all of the significance of Townsville’s proud military heritage.

Kaye and I have enjoyed Townsville’s cultural vibrancy, its natural beauty, and its many wonderful attractions.

Most happily, I got to witness the Cowboys edge out the Broncos in the 2015 NRL Grand Final in Sydney – you may not know I am a committed Cowboys supporter!

Through these seven eventful, your City has unceasingly demonstrated the meaning of determination, courage, and most of all, kindness.
