National Council of Women of Queensland 2021 Bursary Presentation

Representing the Minister, the Member for Cooper; our President, Ms Chiou See Anderson; members and supporters of the National Council of Women Queensland.

I too acknowledge the traditional owners of the lands on which we gather, and pay respect to their Elders past and present – with encouragement to their young emerging leaders.

It is a tremendous pleasure to join you this afternoon, both as Governor of Queensland and as your proud Patron – two positions I have been honoured to hold for the past seven years.  

I am delighted that in this final month of my vice-regal term, we can once again meet in person, given that circumstances forced the cancellation of the event planned for August.

I am always inspired by the enthusiasm and drive of Queenslanders who seek to pursue their dreams.

Each year, the National Council of Women of Queensland helps women and girls achieve their dreams, through the generous granting of bursaries.

Life in Queensland (and indeed life around the world) has been challenging for everyone these past 18 months.

Resilience has been a key theme for all of us.

From our frontline workers, to our community leaders, Queensland women have been at the forefront of demonstrating our collective strength and adaptability.

It is worth reflecting on the fact that many of the broader challenges faced by our communities have been met by Queensland women in leadership positions across all industries and endeavours, and in all areas of our State.

These leaders are impressive role models for young women and demonstrate the value of sharing knowledge and wisdom.   

Since 1905, the National Council has been here to continue its support of Queensland women, not just financially, but also emotionally.

Today, this support is reflected through the awarding of the 2021 bursaries.

To the recipients, I commend each one of you on your successes – despite recent challenges – and wish you all the best for your endeavours into the future.

To the altruistic organisations and individuals who have sponsored the bursaries, I extend my gratitude on behalf of the people of Queensland.

Finally, I congratulate the Council once again as it continues to provide Queensland women with the opportunity to pursue their individual development, and in turn, for these individuals to make a valued and enduring contribution to our communities.
