Dalby Local Produce Showcase Dinner
Mayor of Western Downs Regional Council, Councillor Paul McVeigh and Chief Executive Officer, Ms Jodie Taylor; Councillors, local farmers and producers; ladies and gentlemen.
I would like to add to this evening’s very special Welcome to Country performance by also acknowledging the original custodians of the lands on which Dalby stands, and pay my respects to Elders, past, present and emerging. I extend my respects to any First Nations people here with us tonight.
The Western Downs is highly regarded for its local produce, so I was absolutely delighted to accept the kind invitation to come along this evening to sample some of the very best this region has to offer. And if the delicious entrée is a sign of what’s to come – I’m certainly in for a quite a treat!
Dalby and the Western Downs enjoy a rich agricultural heritage which remains at the heart of its economy today. The enduring success of the industry is a culmination of the remarkable work ethic, resilience and passion of your community – from the growers and farmers, to the hoteliers and tourism operators – in every corner of the region, the community spirit and pride in supporting local produce shines through.
And you have every right to be proud.
I recognise that the journey from paddock to plate involves the work of many, and it is rarely without it challenges. Certainly, Mother Nature has thrown her fair share of torment your way in recent years. From the bushfires of 2019, through drought, then the recent floods, you have persevered.
I am so honoured that you have invited me to share in a taste of your region this evening. Like you, I am a big believer in supporting local. At Government House, we aim to feature Queensland produce as the main element on our menus as much as possible. The fact we have been able to achieve this for almost every one of the many events we have hosted so far this year is testament to the variety and quality of our local produce in this great State.
So, as I look at tonight’s menu so thoughtfully curated by Ms Lauren Butler of The Baking Asylum, I’m particularly excited to sample some of the Western Down’s best, seasonal delicacies and report back to the Government House Hospitality Team who, like me, are always excited to discover and promote Queensland owned and grown.
Thank you for your kind and generous hospitality and I wish you all a wonderful evening of fine, local dining.
