Dance for Daniel
Minister Farmer, representing the Premier; Minister Dutton, representing the Prime Minister; Minister Andrews; Bruce and Denise Morcombe; all other distinguished guests; ladies and gentlemen.
I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the lands around Brisbane, the Turrbal and Jagera peoples, and extend respectful greetings to Elders, past, present and emerging.
Graeme and I are deeply honoured to be here, as this is the first time I have been part of this very special event in my role as Governor, I do hope, Bruce and Denise, you will excuse my rather feeble attempt at ‘red tie’!
It has never really been my colour!
But a few months ago, I purchased matching earrings and a necklace in red especially for tonight.
They are made by an artist named Tania Fitzgerald in Bundaberg, using Murano millefiori.
She was just so delighted to know I would be wearing them at such a special occasion, in honour of a truly remarkable Queensland family.
The main reason I am here is to acknowledge, thank and encourage everyone involved with the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.
Over the past 17 years, it has grown into one of Australia’s most trusted and cherished charities.
Its contributions to the safety of Australian children are far too numerous to list in my brief remarks, but I firmly believe the Foundation’s successes are driven by two key factors.
The first is the Foundation’s absolute clarity of vision – preserving Daniel’s legacy by preventing crimes against children.
The second factor is the inspirational courage, passion and determination of Bruce and Denise Morcombe.
With the support of their incredible family and close-knit supporters, they have transformed their harrowing personal experiences into a powerful movement for good.
Thank you to everyone for your attendance tonight.
Your presence transcends support for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation alone.
It is a powerful reminder of the deeper connections we forge as a community by working together and by supporting one another.
And that makes me so very proud to be Governor of Queensland.
