Dinner in support of Queensland's Rural Women
Good evening, all and welcome.
I begin by acknowledging the Original Custodians of the lands on which we gather, and pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.
Graeme and I are so pleased you could join us for dinner at Government House tonight, and thank those of you who have travelled some distance to be here.
As Governor, I believe it imperative that Queenslanders from regional and remote areas are recognised for their contributions to the fortunes of our entire state, and I therefore commend all of you, for your efforts in making Queensland stronger, richer and much more vibrant.
This evening, however—in the wake of the UN’s recent “International Day for Rural Women”—I am shining a special spotlight on the women at this table, who represent the incredible depth of capability, determination and resilience of others living and working in our unique regional communities.
As women, you are already required to wear many hats, but as country women, I am sure that the demands on your time and energy are even greater. You are home-makers, farmers, producers, entrepreneurs, innovators, business-people, and the storytellers of rural life in Queensland.
You work with local government, you help to improve health outcomes, you serve on boards and lead not-for-profits.
You advocate, lobby, and champion for causes that are reaching deeply into every aspect of our society.
Your efforts are having an immense and beneficial impact—not only in significant tangible ways, such as on Queensland’s economy, or on the outstanding successes of our agricultural sector—but on the strength of our state itself, ensuring we strive for fairness, inclusiveness and diversity, regardless of location.
As leaders, you are forging a path for younger women to follow, sharing your wisdom, knowledge, and friendship, to guide and encourage others.
You are there to celebrate the triumphs, and help your communities face the challenges that, at their worst, can be devastating.
Whatever life presents you; I know that you are proud of the places you call home, and are passionately committed to improving life for people on the land.
For all of this, I want to express both my admiration and my gratitude.
Tonight’s dinner is my small way of acknowledging the incredibly valuable role of rural women in Queensland, and so I hope that you enjoy this opportunity to chat and share your stories.
I also hope that you enjoy this evening’s culinary sensations, which Chef Paul has created using the very best and freshest of Queensland ingredients. Of course, we wouldn’t have it any other way!
