Legacy Brisbane Gala Dinner
While I do not share Sir John’s military pedigree, I am extremely proud, as a medical practitioner-turned Governor, to follow in his footsteps in accepting Patronage of Legacy Brisbane.
I am especially pleased to announce my Patronage tonight, in this majestic building which Sir John himself officially opened in 1930.
The Legacy movement in Queensland was borne out of necessity.
The horrors of World War One had resulted, not only in injury or death amongst those serving overseas, but hardship for so many of their loved ones at home.
The 73 founding members of Brisbane Legacy – many of them ex-servicemen – acted as 73 fathers to the many thousands of children who had lost their own during the Great War.
Since those early days, sadly, the need for Legacy’s special support has continued.
For over 90 years, the organisation has strived to ensure that the partners and children of veterans who tragically give their lives or health serving their country, are not left disadvantaged.
The long-term financial, social, developmental and emotional assistance offered to more than six thousand family members across South-East, Central and Western Queensland, must be a reassuring beacon of hope.
We know the wounds suffered are not always physical.
It is tremendously reassuring to know that Legacy recognises the detrimental consequences of war-related mental trauma and PTSD, and extends its support to those families affected.
The Legacy story highlights the crucial and committed contributions of its volunteers – its Legatees - who remain the organisation’s enduring strength.
Tonight’s special Gala Dinner is also supported by the Australian Defence Force.
I use this opportunity tonight to pay tribute to their efforts, and thank them for their selfless devotion to duty. I also publicly express my gratitude for their ceremonial turnout on Monday in support of my swearing-in. I was greatly honoured by the ADF presence.
I further extend my heartfelt appreciation to Legacy Brisbane’s Board, executive and staff, for upholding the organisation’s foundational promise to help families carry on with their lives. This event is a timely reminder that Legacy relies on the generous spirit of others to continue its work.
Funding raised through this, and other events, corporate partnerships, donations and bequests ensures that the eleven new families who come to Legacy Brisbane each month seeking help, do not have to fight alone.
Finally, as I wish you all a successful evening, I now have the great honour of presenting this Patronage certificate to the President, in recognition of my gratitude for all you do. Thank you.
