Loreto College Ceremony of Excellence
Loreto College Board Chair, Ms Donna Orazio and members of the Board; Principal, Mrs Kim Wickham; staff; students (past and present); parents and friends; distinguished guests; and everyone here this afternoon supporting the Loreto College community.
I too, acknowledge the original custodians of the lands around Brisbane, the Turrbal and Jagera people, and extend respectful greetings to Elders, past, present and emerging, and to any First Nations people here today.
Thank you to your College Captains Jordan and Abbey for such a warm welcome, and may I also congratulate the orchestra for their outstanding performance - well done!
I am delighted to be joining you this afternoon on this significant and uplifting school occasion, as we honour exceptional students who have achieved and contributed at the highest level at Loreto College in 2022.
An award for excellence does not come easily. It requires determination, hard work, and much courage to push through the inevitable setbacks associated with success.
Whether you are being recognised for your academic work, cultural pursuits, sporting prowess or service to the community, each of you should be very, very proud of what you have accomplished.
Not only does your award acknowledge your diligence and resolve, but it also reflects the enormous pride your school has in you.
The recognition you are receiving tonight is also significant to those who have supported you along the way.
I am sure you join me in commending your College Principal, Mrs Wickham, and your hardworking teachers for their devotion and dedication. By sharing their wisdom, guiding your studies and encouraging your interest to learn, they have brought out the very best in you, enabling you to shine.
Thanks must also go to your parents, friends and mentors, many of whom are here celebrating alongside you. They are, and will remain, your biggest advocates. They have supported and encouraged you, and it is their love and care that will help you safely navigate the complex world beyond the College gates.
At Loreto College, students are nurtured to understand and believe that women have the capacity ‘to make a profound difference for good in the world.’ I couldn’t agree more, and for young women of the 21st century, opportunities abound.
From my experience, careers and personal life never quite follow the trajectory we anticipated upon leaving school — and that can be a wonderful thing!
As your futures unfold you will be presented with opportunities and challenges. Face them with confidence, follow your passions and be true to yourself.
With the values and education you have gained at Loreto College, I know you are well equipped to step out and make your mark.
Thank you very much for inviting me to be part of your special Ceremony of Excellence this afternoon and congratulations to all the awardees.
