Mareeba Community Afternoon Tea
Mareeba Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Angela Toppin AM; community leaders and first responders; distinguished guests; ladies and gentlemen.
I begin by acknowledging the Original Custodians of the lands on which we gather, and pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and to all First Nations people here today. Your deep wisdom and ancient traditions enrich and inspire us all, and contribute so much to the vibrancy of this region.
As Governor of Queensland, I place tremendous importance on visiting regional Queenslanders where they live and work, so I can learn first-hand about the challenges you face, and the accomplishments you celebrate.
Graeme and I are therefore so delighted to be with you all in the lovely town of Mareeba, as part of our broader trip to Far North Queensland.
We have spent a busy day here meeting with Council, visiting Mareeba State School, the Mareeba Hospital and fabulous Heritage Museum—and now cap it off by spending time with you over afternoon tea.
What stands out for us—and is so apparent in each of the places we’ve visited today—is the deep sense of community spirit that binds you all and makes you so supportive of each other.
This is particularly vital when times are difficult—I know the devastating effects of Cyclone Jasper have lingered, with local fruit and vegetable growers hit particularly hard. Yet communities thrive when they welcome the contribution of diverse perspectives and abilities, and share in their triumphs.
The Mareeba region, with its rich Indigenous heritage, beneficial multicultural influence, and the outstanding willingness of locals to help others, is proving that such unity of purpose, and pride for togetherness, are keeping this part of our state strong, and encouraging growth and success.
Of course, you also happen to live in a pretty special place, with the reef, rainforest and outback on your doorstep.
And with international fame for your coffee industry, the immense productivity of your agricultural farms, cattle properties and industries, and as a hub for tourism, your region also brings tremendous enterprise that has a beneficial effect felt here and right across our state.
Each of you plays a part in making Mareeba what it is—as your enthusiasm and commitment strengthen these connections, and ensure the future is bright for everyone.
I therefore thank you for your efforts, and for welcoming us to your beautiful town and shire.
Graeme and I look forward to chatting with you over a cuppa.
