Pas Des Fleurs, an Art Exhibition by Isabella Allis
Our host, whose art we are here tonight to admire, Miss Isabella Allis; Artistic Director QLD Ballet, Li Cunxin AO and Mary Li; Aspire Gallery Manager Mr Lindsay Mengel; distinguished guests; ladies and gentlemen.
I begin by acknowledging the original custodians of the lands around Brisbane, the Turrbal and Jagera people, and pay my respects to Elders, past, present and emerging.
As Governor, and Patron of the Queensland Ballet I am honoured to be here this evening. It is an exciting opportunity to celebrate a local artist in the very talented Isabella Allis, and to share in that celebration with the truly iconic Queensland ballet company.
Graeme and I feel a true kinship with tonight’s exhibition. Our love of both the ballet, and the visual arts have culminated in a very special showcase.
Much like ballet, Isabella’s artwork is classical yet creative while remaining delicate, intricate, and pure at heart.
It is evident that attention to fine detail is an important part of Isabella’s work, and I make particular mention of the symbolic detailing around her ‘Dancing from the Heart’ piece. You will notice some beautiful gold leaf detailing around the edges, including the Cooktown Orchid, Queensland's official floral emblem.
It is also humbling to see the small plane; a nod, I am told, to my role in helping establish Queensland’s world-class aeromedical retrieval service in my former role as Chief Health Officer.
While the leaping dancer and kite recognise the journey of my friend Li – the obstacles he has overcome to achieve at the highest level and his enormous contribution not just to his own family, but to our wider society.
Graeme and I are the proud owner of several artworks we have commissioned from the lovely Isabella over the years, including our individual portraits, which are now on display at Government House. But perhaps my two absolute favourites – and as a mother, I may be biased – are the two portraits featuring my lovely daughters Rebecca and Jane. Both are ballet themed and beautifully encompass Isabella’s skills.
I sincerely congratulate and thank Isabella, Li and all concerned with this magnificent exhibition. I am certain it will enjoy the tremendous success it deserves. Thank you.
