Queenslanders with Disability Network 2024 Morning Tea
Acting Director-General of the Department of Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety, Ms Belinda Drew; Queensland Disability Network Chair, Dr Sharon Boyce and CEO, Ms Michelle Moss; distinguished guests; ladies and gentlemen.
I begin by acknowledging the Original Custodians of the lands around Brisbane, the Jagera and Turrbal people, and pay my respects to their Elders past, present and emerging and to any First Nations people with us today.
Welcome everyone to Government House! Graeme and I are delighted to see so many members and friends of Queenslanders with Disability Network (QDN) here this morning, as we celebrate the efforts of an organisation that does so much to further the personal and working lives of people with disability in this state.
As Patron of QDN and other incredible organisations with us this morning, I am enormously proud to see the meaning of the word “network” in action, as you each strive to forge the valuable and influential connections that reach deeply into our communities—encompassing government, services, business, universities and industry—and of course, the families and individuals at the heart of your efforts.
QDN encourages the exchange of information, the sharing of ideas, and the building of precious social bonds.
Significantly, as this thriving collaborative network is run by and for people with diverse disabilities, it ensures that those who are affected most directly by the policy decisions, initiatives and activities taking place in our society, are integrally involved in the consultation and implementation process itself.
Through the many Peer Support Groups across our state, Queenslanders with disability are given a chance to speak about the issues that matter to them, specific to their location, and unique to their requirements.
At the same time, the QD-eNgage initiative continues to strengthen ties with business and other organisations to ensure that workplaces are more accessible and inclusive, while the Emerging Leaders Program provides a wonderful chance for the practical and personal development of those, who I know, will make a lasting impact on the future of our state.
This network truly is a positive force, influencing the necessary changes that break down barriers, and enable people with disabilities to follow their dreams, fully participate in society, and be highly valued for their contributions.
The overarching goal—to amplify leadership of those with disabilities—drives every aspect of QDN’s charter, and I am pleased to observe that this aligns perfectly with the theme of this year’s UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities, taking place next month.
I know that everyone in this room shares my enthusiasm for the inroads you are making, and the beneficial impact you are having.
On behalf of all Queenslanders, I commend the dedicated QDN Board, Executive, staff and volunteers and each of the amazing members, for all you do, each and every day, to drive change.
I also thank the generous supporters who make this work possible and the carers who provide vital companionship, along with their assistance.
Please enjoy this special morning tea.
