Reception in Support of Cystic Fibrosis Queensland
Representing the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Councillor for The Gap Ward Steven Toomey; Chair of Cystic Fibrosis Queensland, Mrs Margaret Walker and Directors of the Board; Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Ms Petrina Fraccaro; clinicians; supporters; distinguished guests; ladies and gentlemen.
I begin by acknowledging the original custodians of the lands around Brisbane, the Turrbal and Jagera people, and extend respectful greetings to Elders, past, present and emerging.
It is a great privilege for Graeme and I to welcome you all to Government House today in support of Cystic Fibrosis Queensland, marking my first official engagement as your Patron-in-Chief.
Cystic fibrosis is, sadly, the most common, and life-limiting genetic condition affecting Australians. Its diagnosis profoundly changes lives in many ways – and not just for the one diagnosed.
As a parent, I can only imagine what it would be like to adjust to caring for a child with cystic fibrosis; but I am told that the trick is in routine and discipline.
With the routine of medications, physiotherapy and discipline in diet and infection control children can be taught to self-control, and ultimately, self-manage their condition into adulthood.
To the families of those with cystic fibrosis, and the medical specialists who treat it – I commend you for doing your best to support the condition. You are leading this effort.
Of course, those efforts would be much harder without the support of Cystic Fibrosis Queensland.
The support programs, research, and fundraising efforts aim to not only manage cystic fibrosis but to slow its impact and lessen its symptoms.
With the support of Cystic Fibrosis Queensland, and other dedicated organisations, people with cystic fibrosis are now living longer and healthier lives. Of course, it is a cure that we ultimately seek.
As Governor and Patron-in-Chief, I sincerely thank the Board, medical specialists, staff, volunteers, sponsors and supporters of Cystic Fibrosis Queensland for the brilliant work accomplished in our communities.
Before we conclude formalities for the evening, I would like to present a Certificate of Patronage to the Chair of Cystic Fibrosis Queensland, Ms Margaret Walker.
Thank you all once again, it is truly a pleasure to have you here.
