The Cairns Amateurs Carnival Sapphire Ball
Cairns Regional Council Mayor, Councillor Bob Manning OAM; Cairns Amateurs President, Mr David Goodman and Committee; Cairns Amateurs Patron and Racing Manager Brisbane Racing, Mr Bart Sinclair OAM; Distinguished guests; ladies and gentlemen.
I too, begin by acknowledging the original custodians of the lands on which we gather, and pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and to all First Nations people here this evening.
The Sapphire Ball is a highlight among highlights during the Cairns Amateurs racing carnival, and what a stunning setting in which to hold this glittering event.
Graeme and I are delighted to be here this year, after being unable to join you last year after the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth the Second.
As Governor of Queensland, I am proud to continue the Vice-Regal tradition of supporting the Cairns Amateurs.
It is not only a highlight in the Spring racing calendar, but also an important community, business, and tourism event for Far North Queensland.
What began as a humble race meeting in 1959 has grown into a sophisticated major sporting and social event, attracting people from across Queensland and far beyond in its 65th year.
When the focus is not on the turf of the historic Cannon Park Racecourse, this three-day festival showcases the dynamism of Cairns.
The social, community and industry events help us understand why this city, and region, is such an incredible place to visit and to live!
Congratulations to everyone involved — from the President and Committee to staff, sponsors and, of course, patrons, whether you’re having a flutter or fluttering about, soaking up the atmosphere.
Your support is vital to ensuring the Cairns Amateurs returns year after year, bringing with it the kind of extra energy and enthusiasm on which regional cities like this thrive.
Now, before we enjoy an evening of fine food and spectacular entertainment, I invite you all to stand, raise your glasses and toast the ongoing success of this fabulous sporting and social event.
Thank you and I hope you have a wonderful evening.
